Today’s trip takes us to Umbria to visit another of the great medieval cities in central Italy: Orvieto. On leaving the hotel we make one of the Monte Amiata’s most beautiful small towns and then go down onto the Via Francigena (now called the Cassia). Arrived in Orvieto it is possible to go right up into the town as far as the cathedral by bike. The dying city of Bagnoregio is only a few k.ms. further on. It is a magical place.
The lake of Bolsena is our next goal and we shall stop in the medieval town of Bolsena for lunch and then circle the lake, through medieval villages, evocative scenery of great beauty and then make our way back to Amiata for a delicious dinner before a well earned rest.
