We shall start off by going to the Etruscan ruins at Vetulonia where we get an idea of the ancient race that lived around Monte Amiata. We then go on to the coastal resort. There are beautiful glimpses of the Tyrrhenian sea, and it is fascinating to watch the fishing boats returning to port.

At this point we turn south towards the promontory of Monte Argentario, stopping at Talamone, the old port of the Sienese Republic, and we can have lunch in one of the typical restaurants on the front. Then off to Porto Santo Stefano, preserve of Italy’s V.I.Ps.

The panoramic road, above a precipitous drop to the sea is impressive. To return wecross the most characteristic part of the Maremma, home of cowboys and the famous Morellino di Scansano wine, as far as Roccalbegna, a village huddled under an amazing cliff: the road is twisty and a lot of fun.

This thirteenth century Sienese village is often cited as an example of beautiful architecture. A visit to the Sasso and the Cassero Senese (Keep) is obligatory. A final effort and we shall reach the hotel, where a large dinner to crown a wonderful day awaits us. We shall try some great Morellino di Scansano wines again this evening.
